Thirty days before my 30th birthday I had a minor freak out. Sure, 30 is just a number. But it’s a pretty major number. I decided I was simply going to ignore it. No party, no dinner, just me, my dog and a bottle of wine. But as my birthday got closer, my friend Stephanie had a good point. Would you rather celebrate in your pjs or in a fabulous dress with all your friends? I chose the latter—and was lucky enough to have Leslie Kaplan of Encore take care of the rest.
It’s incredible what a gorgeous party can do. The minute I walked in, all my fears of turning 30 went away. I smiled and realized how lucky I was—and how much I have to look forward to in my 30s. Here are some of the highlights of the soiree…
The Space: We chose one of my fave restaurants, Fig & Olive on Melrose Place, for the event (their crostinis are to die for!). The plush white couches and seductive lighting was the perfect base to set the scene.
The Dress: My party was very last minute so I didn’t have too much time to think about what to wear. Instead of trying something new on my 30th, I stuck to what makes me feel best: a high-neck, skin-tight dress with a moderate hemline. Considering my birthday always falls on the first day of Spring, I thought this cheerful pink by Torn by Ronny Kobo was the perfect choice. And birthday earrings from Swarovski added just the right amount of sparkle.
The Flowers: Leslie worked with Eddie Zaratsian, the creative director of Tick Tock Florals to design arrangements based on my favorite color. I loved how the silver vases added a bit of a vintage vibe.
The Cake: I was introduced to Duff’s Cakemix during my friend Sam’s wedding cake decorating party. As much as I love a good DIY, I let the pros handle my party. They created such an elegant design with yellow flowers to match the décor. The three-layer cake was almost too pretty to eat!
The Photo Booth: Leslie created a dedicated photo area on the outside patio with oversize white paper flowers. I felts as if I was posing in an elegant Alice in Wonderland! We also had tiaras, blowers and signs for a celebratory touch.
The Party Favors: Bunches of daffodils added to the décor at during the party. As guests left, they got to take home the flowers next to the “Thanks a Bunch” sign. It was such an easy DIY party favor idea—and left for less clean up!
The Friends: I saved the best for last. A huge thank you to all my wonderful friends who made my birthday special— and for making me realize just how fabulous 30 can be.
