Neon ’90s Party

Sydne Style - what to wear to a neon 90s party

If you’ve been a long time reader of Sydne Style you probably know that whenever I throw a party I always have a theme. I’ve done ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s for past birthdays. So this year it was all about ’90s—neon ’90s to be exact. My invite gave inspiration with photos of Clarissa Explains It All, Kelly Kapowski, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and, my personal fave, Cindy Crawford. (more…)

A Great Gatsby Party Costume

To celebrate her 30th birthday, my best friend Maria had a Great Gatsby party in New York City. I thought about going the traditional flapper route, as I’ve done for past Roaring 1920s costume parties. But with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan’s movie set to debut next year, the fashion world has gone into a Gatsby tizzy. The result? Art deco accessories and beaded options galore! (more…)

ttF Fashion Diary: Anything But Clothes Party

ttF Fashion Staple: Glitter Bag
My friend Page hosts an annual Anything But Clothes Christmas party. The preparation feels very Project Runway. I took inspiration from last year’s tinsel skirt and create a similar fringe mini with gold and silver. My corset was made with tinsel glued on to a tablecloth at the bust. Then I create a cutout middle with snowflake ornaments. I laced it up in the back with gold ribbon. My friend Jamie liked the idea so much so I created a similar outfit for her as well, using the tinsel for a one shoulder neckline. Since there was so much volume with the tinsel I made a beaded belt with garland to cinch our waists. My favorite part of our DIY-ed outfits? The movement when you dance!

ttF Fashion Diary: Roaring 20s Party

ttF Fashion Staple: Bejeweled Peep Toes
To celebrate the end of her 20s, my friend had a Roaring 20s themed birthday. I adore costume parties. But since this one was at The Parlour Room, not a private residence, I decided not to go as all out as last year’s Great Gatsby fete. Instead, I slipped into what used to be my mom’s fringe dress. There’s one at H&M right now that’s incredibly similar. I added a vintage-looking beaded bag, and a faux fur bedazzled with a brooch for good measure. While this month’s shoe staple isn’t necessarily 1920s, it certainly added an extra dose of celebratory sparkle.
