Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week Trends: Excited For… White Button-Down Shirts

New York Fashion Week Spring Trend White Button-Down Shirts

White Button-Down Shirts
Perhaps it’s the Gap effect. You know, how the All-American brand had designers re-work the classic white button-down? Well it looks like other designers want to participate in Gap Design Editions. My favorite version of the white button-down actually wasn’t on the runway. It was on a girl sitting near me at Hervé Léger’s show who paired her bandage skirt with an oversized white button-down and studded booties. It was the perfect mix of edgy, classic and sexy.

ttF Daily Fave: Amelia Rae Designs Leather Chain Bracelets

Amelia Rae Designs Leather Chain BraceletsLast night, I met the super cool jewelry designer behind Amelia Rae Designs.  She creates unique pieces using chains, leather, feathers and gorgeous stones.  I wore one of her necklaces last night and it was to-die-for (there will def be a pic coming up later this week). In the meantime, I wanted to show you some of her leather bracelets. They’re eons more affordable than the trendy CC Skye wrap bracelets worn by Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen and Shenae Grimes. But they’re just as edgy and since each one is handmade, no two are alike! Personally, I’d rather have a one-of-a-kind item rather than the same piece MK wore.

Check out Nicole’s jewelry at her Amelia Rae Designs Etsy shop. I hear there are new designs coming soon!

Ask ThinkThru: How to Toughen Up a Generic Wardrobe

How To Toughen Up a Basic Outfit

I am a college student who has dressed fairly generically her whole life.  I have always been drawn, however, to a more “tough” look, i.e boots, leather jackets, leather cuffs and jeans. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t wear all of this all at once, but I would like to incorporate touches of it into my wardrobe. How does one go about incorporating a new look into their life in an un-awkward manner? Do you have any suggestions on some good starter outfits/looks?
—Rachel D.

The easiest way to incorporate a new look into your life is with accessories. Start with one accessory at a time and slowly build the tougher look you desire. I head to Forever 21 when I try something new. That way, if I end up feeling ridiculous at least I only spent $15 on a necklace and $30 on a pair of shoes I’ll probably never wear again.

As for starter outfits, a motorcycle jacket is a great item to begin with. It doesn’t need to be leather. Mine is actually a black jean material. The jacket toughens up everything from a basic denim skirt to a flirty summer dress. As you get more adventurous, you can pair it with leather pants or ripped jeans. Another easy way to add some edge is with a chain necklace. It goes with t-shirts, blouses, dresses, basically everything you have in your closet. Later on, you can work your way up to booties and studded accessories. And don’t be afraid of color! Black obviously looks tougher than hot pink, but that doesn’t mean you can pop your basics with brights.

And remember, confidence is key. If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, it won’t look as good. Keep reading to watch the video I did on how to achieve rocker chic style. And good luck!

ThinkThru Fashionista: Devora’s Downtown Chic LBD

Celebrities have access to the top designers and stylists. But us regular folk have to make due on our own. In this new weekly feature, I’m showing how my most stylish readers think thru fashion—and offering ways to achieve their look. First up? Reader Devora makes a LBD anything but boring with rocker chic accessories.
