Inspiration from the Emmys 2012 Red Carpet

While most of us rarely have the opportunities to wear full-length gowns, we can take inspiration from the red carpet. And the 64 Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were full of trends that easily translate to real life. Here are my top picks:

WINE

(Julia Louis Dreyfus in Vera Wang, Kat Dennings J. Mendel, Jena Malone J. Mendel, Tina Fey Vivienne Westwood)

Considering oxblood is one of the hottest trends for fall (see how I wore it at fashion week!), it was no surprise that many actresses slipped into deep red gowns. As you can see, the color looks beautiful on brunettes.

GRAY

(Christina Hendricks Christian Siriano, Emily VanCamp in J. Mendel, Sarah Hyland in Marchesa, Connie Britton Andrew Gn)

With the popularity of 50 Shades of Grey, the subdued color has become a major statement in the fashion world. To avoid looking washed out, follow Christina and Sarah’s lead and add a dash of color on your lip.

ZEST

(Julie Bowen in Monique Lhuillier, Claire Danes in Lanvin, Padma Lushki in Monique Lhuillier, Julianne Moore in Christian Dior)

One of my favorite trends for Spring 2013 was zest. And glorious shades of orange, lemon and citron were present at the red carpet. Since the color makes such a statement within itself, limit your accessories to one or two pieces when wearing a bold dress.

AQUATIC

(Heidi Klum in Alexandre Vauthier, Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad, Julianne Hough in Georges Hobeika, Hayden Panettiere in Marchesa)

Another big trend from the Spring 2013 runways was the aquatic trend. And there was a sea of blue at the Emmys. Sofia Vergara even looked like a mermaid! These cool colors look gorgeous with metallics, so pile on your gold or silver.

LACE

(Amanada Peet in Calvin Klein, Anna Chlumsky in Christian Siriano, Kristen Wiig in Balenciaga, Lena Dunham in Prada)

Lace is popular for fall… and even more trendy for spring! So investing in a lace dress is a very safe shopping choice. Lena’s was a bit heavy so I recommend going for a lighter fabric for a more feminine look.

Out of the ladies above, Heidi Klum and Anna Chlumsky were my absolute faves. But they weren’t the only actresses who gave me fashion chills. Here are my four other best dressed picks: (more…)

Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week Trends: Fringe

(Ralph Lauren, Marchesa, Catherine Malandrino, Custo Barcelona)

There’s a little fringe for everyone for spring. Free-spirited? Try a fringe poncho or vest. Edgy? Slip into leather pants lined with fringe. Retro? Go flapper chic in a fringe skirt. The possibilities are endless!

Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week Trends: Quintessential 60s

(Michael Kors, Marchesa, Jenny Packham, Marc Jacobs)

The 60s are having a major moment in fashion. Think mod prints, swing coats and party shifts. To keep the look modern, add an of-the-moment shoe, like the sparkling Christian Louboutin platforms at Jenny Packham.

Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week Trends: Xposed Midriff

(Jason Wu, Marchesa, Richard Chai Love, Timo Weiland)

Too scared to bare your abs last spring? Well, you’ll have another chance in 2013. Skin was the new black on the runways. To make this trend work in real life, steer clear of showing off your belly-button. Instead, opt for a sliver of flesh peeking out above a high-waist skirt.
