My initial thought for March’s ttF Staples was to choose one of spring’s popular trends: colorblocking, Southwest, white out or florals. But all I could think about was what a celebratory month it would be. And nothing screams celebration like gold. For starters, it’s my birthday month, and I’m toasting with my fellow Pisces BFF in a few weeks down in Miami. This month also marks a huge, exciting change in my life, which I promise to share soon. Now all I need to go with my staples is a golden tan. Hopefully it warms up soon!
Here’s the breakdown of the 6 Fashion Staples I’ll be wearing at least 6 different times for the next 31 days:
1. Metallic Knit Sweater (H&M)
A huge trend I saw on the fall runways at New York Fashion Week was metallic knits. This sweater from H&M can carry me from now until next season depending on what I layer underneath. Plus, I love the way the chainmail knit feels so slinky against my skin.
2. Gold Hoops (lia sophia)
Gold hoops are a classic. But with spring’s 70s revival they’re the perfect piece to add a retro glam feel to any outfit. I have small ears, so I can’t go too big with my earrings. But I do envy my friends who can carry off a large hoop. This month, my moderate size ones will have to do.
3. Bandeau Top (Ani Lee)
My incredibly busy schedule last month left me with zero workout time. So a trendy bandeau top was the last thing on my mind. But when I told my friend about this month’s golden staples, she gifted me Ani Lee’s bustier top. I was drawn to the exotic looking print and figured it was incentive to get back to my Physique 57 DVDs.
4. Beaded Belt (Glitter n Glue)
In honor of National Craft Month, I wanted to include a DIY staple. And when it comes to do-it-yourself, my friend Kristen Turner is my go-to gal. She created a one-of-a-kind beaded belt for me with craftsmanship that rivals any expensive boutique. The craziest part? It cost her 10 bucks! To find out how to make your own, watch the video tutorial on her awesome blog Glitter N Glue.
5. Metallic Bandage Skirt (Herve Leger)
If you follow me on Twitter (I’m @sydnesummer), you might remember me tweeting, “Should I splurge on this skirt?” when I was shopping on Lincoln Road on South Beach over New Year’s. Well, all you twitter followers are enablers when it comes to shopping! I’ve never spent so much on so little fabric but thanks to the bandage skirt being on sale, I couldn’t turn back on my decision. Yes, there are cheaper options out there but nothing shows off curves like Herve Leger. And I plan to make the most out of purchase this month.
6. Gold Wooden Platforms (Coach)
The Coach Brynne Heel is perfect for spring. The wood platform is trendy and lengthens the legs and the brushed golden bronze glams it up without going overboard. While thicker straps can often be unflattering, these are actually slimming since the color is so close to the skin.
