ttF NYFW Runway Recap: Day 1
Project Runway
Spoiler alert: Jessica Simpson is the guest judge for the finale. Heidi Klum was red hot, literally. Nina Garcia disguised her baby bump with edgy chains. I was most surprised by April. Instead of all the deconstructed black we’ve been seeing on the show, she took a softer approach with a 90s grunge aesthetic in neutrals and pastels. It was quite beautiful. Gretchen was underwhelming. I expected the most out of her and she gave a collection that belongs at Coachella. Cassanova caused my jaw to drop with studded hot pants. Valerie brought brights and impeccable tailoring. Mondo kept with his playful signature prints. Michael Costello’s fringe, sequins and feathers reminded me of a luxurious mix between Sue Wong and Mandalay. Andy’s space-like headpieces distracted from his intricate detail work. And Ivy made me want to go to a resort… with a suitcase of her clothes. I can’t wait to see who makes final three!
Christian Siriano
This season, Mr. Fierce was inspired by Africa, India and China. Crisp white cotton opened the show. Cognac leather was abundant on belts, shorts and jackets. Bright prints based on digital photographs brightened the runway in turquoise and paprika. The shoes for Payless were caged high. And dramatic tulle closed the show.
Trends: White, Red, One Shoulder, Safari, Neutrals, Exotics, Animal Prints, Cutouts
