I wanted my son’s first movie theater experience to be extra special. So when the Paw Patrol movie came out I told him we were going to dress up for the big day. He reused his DIY Chase costume from last Halloween but wanted me to be Skye. So I threw on a pink tank, a brown matching set, added sunnies for goggles, and then printed out a pink shield for an easy DIY Skye costume. 10 out of 10 recommend dressing up for the movies (and if you need an easy family Halloween costume idea, this one keeps giving!).

I wanted spooky chic Halloween decor without spending too much. Enter: two spools of black ribbon. It was under $20 and super simple.

I used three spools total: a thin black satin ribbon I already had in a multi-pack for gift wrapping, a thicker black satin ribbon, and a black chiffon ribbon. The chiffon gets tattered in the wind and gives me Black Swan vibes. I tied a black bow on everything, from cheap plastic skeletons and a DIY Halloween wreath to my Christmas candle holders from last year. It’s all about reusing what you already have.

What do butterflies mean to you? 🦋
I’ve been seeing them everywhere recently. I think it’s a sign of transformation. Others say it’s just the season in San Diego.

Either way, it got me thinking about my butterfly metamorphosis over the years. It’s gone from middle school booty dancing to ordering a butterfly habitat on Amazon for same-day delivery. Saturday night at 42 is watching the broken butterfly Bijou and I found on our walk live out her final weeks in peace.

{day 4} letting go is emotional

Even with 18 years of fashion under my belt, it still took me four days to clear out my closet. But after the sadness of watching my old life pile up in front of me passed, I felt a release. As hard as it is to let go of people, dreams, or clothing that no longer fit you in your current life, trying to squeeze your hips into jeans and feeling like a sausage is way worse.

I hate the word midlife.

But like most of my millennial and Gen X friends, I no longer fit into who I was, both the clothes and the life. My shift happened in my 40s, after a rapid stack of transitions: moving cities, pregnancy, breakups, motherhood, perimenopause, a career change, and body changes.

Figuring out who I am at 42 is a 40 day challenge I created for myself to share that messy, vulnerable in-between stage of evolving into who we’re becoming. I show up here looking put together (enough) while I figure it out with you, one day at a time. Call it my midlife evolution… until we can think of a better word for midlife.
