What do butterflies mean to you? 🦋
I’ve been seeing them everywhere recently. I think it’s a sign of transformation. Others say it’s just the season in San Diego.

Either way, it got me thinking about my butterfly metamorphosis over the years. It’s gone from middle school booty dancing to ordering a butterfly habitat on Amazon for same-day delivery. Saturday night at 42 is watching the broken butterfly Bijou and I found on our walk live out her final weeks in peace.

Even with 18 years of fashion under my belt, it still took me four days to clear out my closet. But after the sadness of watching my old life pile up in front of me passed, I felt a release. As hard as it is to let go of people, dreams, or clothing that no longer fit you in your current life, trying to squeeze your hips into jeans and feeling like a sausage is way worse.

I hate the word midlife.

But like most of my millennial and Gen X friends, I no longer fit into who I was, both the clothes and the life. My shift happened in my 40s, after a rapid stack of transitions: moving cities, pregnancy, breakups, motherhood, perimenopause, a career change, and body changes.

Figuring out who I am at 42 is a 40 day challenge I created for myself to share that messy, vulnerable in-between stage of evolving into who we’re becoming. I show up here looking put together (enough) while I figure it out with you, one day at a time. Call it my midlife evolution… until we can think of a better word for midlife.

When I stopped dressing for Instagram, getting dressed got easier. More women started asking me where I got my clothes when I was out. Easy outfit formulas emerged without me thinking. I found a color palette that makes me happy: calming neutrals, classic black, whites, and denims. And my effortless casual classic style in my 40s revealed itself.

These are a few outfits that made me feel good so far this summer. We’ll see how it translates for fall.

I don’t wish family court upon anyone. One positive outcome in the courtroom, though, was being reminded that we’re all works in progress, no matter our age. Hearing that out loud, and rereading it over and over in a transcript, has made figuring out my life at 42 a little less intimidating.

Tbh I tried this kinda chic trend multiple times. My first list was true. But it felt boring:

Kinda chic to rewear the same pieces without anyone noticing

Kinda chic to have a kid later in life

Kinda chic to rescue dogs

Kinda chic to accept you don’t have it all figured out

I realized the trend made me audit my whole life into an Instagram carousel. And my life right now just doesn’t audit well.

So I thought about my glimmers: my son, my rescue dog, the warm San Diego sun on my skin, the fresh ocean air. And I realized, everything that matters right now happened within 18 minutes over the weekend. It felt kinda chic to focus on that… and drown out the rest.
