When I stopped dressing for Instagram, getting dressed got easier. More women started asking me where I got my clothes when I was out. Easy outfit formulas emerged without me thinking. I found a color palette that makes me happy: calming neutrals, classic black, whites, and denims. And my effortless casual classic style in my 40s revealed itself.

These are a few outfits that made me feel good so far this summer. We’ll see how it translates for fall.

I don’t wish family court upon anyone. One positive outcome in the courtroom, though, was being reminded that we’re all works in progress, no matter our age. Hearing that out loud, and rereading it over and over in a transcript, has made figuring out my life at 42 a little less intimidating.

I hate the word midlife.

But like most of my millennial and Gen X friends, I no longer fit into who I was, both the clothes and the life. My shift happened in my 40s, after a rapid stack of transitions: moving cities, pregnancy, breakups, motherhood, perimenopause, a career change, and body changes.

Figuring out who I am at 42 is a 40 day challenge I created for myself to share that messy, vulnerable in-between stage of evolving into who we’re becoming. I show up here looking put together (enough) while I figure it out with you, one day at a time. Call it my midlife rebrand… until we can think of a better word for midlife.

Tbh I tried this kinda chic trend multiple times. My first list was true. But it felt boring:

I realized the trend made me audit my whole life into an Instagram carousel. And my life right now just doesn’t audit well.

So I thought about my glimmers: my son, my rescue dog, the warm San Diego sun on my skin, the fresh ocean air. And I realized, everything that matters right now happened within 18 minutes over the weekend. It felt kinda chic to focus on that… and drown out the rest.

Kinda chic to rewear everything in your closet.

This summer I’ve been rotating the same denim and chino shorts, the same boatneck and ribbed tanks, classic button down shirts, white jeans, and the occasional dress. It makes getting dressed so much easier… and way more affordable when you’re redoing your wardrobe (and life).

I know I no longer fit into who I was, both the clothes and the life.

And I haven’t evolved into the woman I’m becoming.

Sharing while I’m in that messy, vulnerable in between stage is scary. But at least I can show up here looking put together while I figure it out with you, one day at a time. 🐚
