For starters, let me just say that I love your boldness of breaking fashion rules by mixing navy and black. Now to answer your question: of course you can wear black shoes! Just take a look at Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, who paired a tan print Vilshenko dress with a navy coat and black boots in London.

If it’s a nighttime event, I suggest taking Sarah Jessica Parker’s lead and go with a metallic shoe. I loved her eclectic mix of a Tory Burch dress, navy YSL jacket and shimmering Manolo Blahnik heels at last week’s Smash premiere.
