The cutout trend is making a comeback for Spring. I know classy isn’t the first word you’d probably think of when you hear cutouts. But you can make the trend super chic. I personally love the cutout trend because it shows just a slip of skin, which I think allows you to be sexy while looking polished.
Since my dress isn’t available yet, I’m sharing what I look for in cutout dresses to ensure a classy look:
- High necklines or lower hemlines
- Strategic cutout placing
- Classic silhouettes

Ok, to go into a little more depth….
High neckline/low hemline
Since you’re showing skin with the cutouts, I like to have the rest of me a little more covered up. I look for dresses that have a modest neckline, whether it be a halter, an asymmetrical top or a crewneck. Another way to ensure a polished look is a modest hemline, like a mid or midi length. If you want a little extra sass, look for dresses that have a slit.
Strategic cutout placing
The placement of the cutout is very important. My favorite places are around the midsection to show a slip of skin. If you’re going to do a cutout up top, a shoulder or neckline is a safe bet. There are some cute cutouts underneath the chest but those definitely work best for smaller busts.
To contrast the more modern cutout design, I favor classic silhouettes, like a streamlined sheath or more forgiving A-line shape.
I hope this lesson on how to make cutouts classy for Spring helps you if you’re thinking about trying out the trend!
