February was probably my hardest month in last year’s ttF Fashion Staples Series. For starters, there’s only 28 days. So I needed to double on staples with many of my outfits. Plus, it’s fashion week… in freezing weather. Even though the city will be blanketed with snow, I still want to bring some color with me to New York. So I on top, I went with a gemstone color palette for my staples. On bottom, I did a wide-leg pant to embrace the season’s trend, and for shoes I brought back one of my past staples for another round.
Here’s the breakdown of the 6 Fashion Staples I’ll be wearing at least 6 different times for the next 28 days:
1. Velvet Blazer (Hype)
Velvet has been a huge trend this season. I used to be indifferent about the fabric but in recent years it’s grown on me, especially in rich colors like this teal.
2. Blue Necklace (lia sophia)
With Prince William giving Kate Middleton Princess Diana’s old ring, sapphires are now all the rage. So it seems to fitting to feature my blue gemstone necklace this month. You may remember it from the this post, and I’ve been getting questions on it from my personal website, too.
3. Gemstone Brooch (from my mother’s closet)
Over the holidays, my mom gave me a few pieces of jewelry she doesn’t wear anymore (love when that happens!). I liked the regal feel about this brooch.
4. Crop Top (PRIM New York)
I was recently introduced to PRIM New York. They’re a brand new label, founded last year by two women who used to work at Tibi. Their first collection is already incredible. I adore the bright solids mixed with graffiti inspired prints. And there’s such a variety of shapes from fitted tanks to draped skirts and fluid tops. I was initially drawn to the silk Nora top because of the chartreuse color. I never wear crop tops but this one falls at the perfect place that the only time it reveals skin is if you lift up your arms. I plan on wearing it with layers and high waist skirts.
5. Wide-Leg Pants (Express)
Jeans are never a problem. But I have an extremely hard time finding pants. They’re always either too big at my waist or too tight on my butt. After seeing Olivia Wilde in Gucci’s spring color block jumpsuit, I decided I wanted to have a navy bottom to go with my green and teal tops. But instead of a skinny style, I wanted to embrace this season’s wider leg. Going to a mall with an exact image in your head of what you want to buy is never a good thing. After trying on pant after pant I was about to give up… until my friend Kristen told me to go into Express. I haven’t been to the store in ages but low and behold there were their Sylist pants staring back at me for $69.90. It was a match made in fashion heaven.
6. Suede Over the Knee Boots (Steve Madden)
Last February these boots were a gem. They kept me warm at fashion week in New York and the moderate heel allowed me to walk without cringing in pain. Since then, they’ve popped into many of my outfits. So, for the first time in 14 months I’m bringing back a staple to show six more ways to wear it.
