I can’t believe Memorial Day is this weekend! My favorite thing to do for the long weekend is go to a Memorial Day BBQ. So here are my five tips on what to wear when you’re celebrating the holiday:
1. Slip into a summer staple.
Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer. So it’s the perfect time to break out your favorite fashion piece. For me, that’s a breezy dress. I love this poplin one from Old Navy because it’s lightweight and has a roomy A-line skirt. You can also do a maxi dress or a chambray romper.
2. Play with prints.
I’m obsessed with wearing white during summer. But it isn’t the most functional for a BBQ. So I usually go for playful prints instead. I thought the palm trees, sailboats and ferris wheel pattern on this dress was too adorable to pass up. It still gives me the white look I love. But if I spill a little mustard from my hot dog it won’t be as obvious as it would if I had worn solid white.
3. Tie on an extra layer.
You never know what the weather is going to be like throughout the day. A great layer for a BBQ or picnic is a chambray shirt. When it’s hot out, you can tie it around your hips—and it doubles as protection your dress if you’re sitting on the grass. When it gets cooler, you can wear it open as a jacket. Or, to create more of an hourglass shape, you can tie at the waist like I did.
4. Add comfy footwear.
Since you’re probably going to be outside, leave your heels at home. They sink into the grass and can get stuck in the crack of a wooden patio. It happened to my friend a few years ago and she was so upset about breaking her heel (not to mention embarrassed!). There are so many cute flats from espadrilles to slip-ons. If you’re shorter like me, try out a comfy wedge. I did nude to lengthen my legs.
5. Bring your patriotic spirit.
Accessories are a great way to inject a little All-American red, white or blue. I love this blue bag from Old Navy because you can wear it on your shoulder or as a cross-body. If you’re feeling extra patriotic, you can always tie a stars and stripes scarf around your purse for decoration.
