I’ve always said that my favorite part about social media is that it gives us the opportunity to connect. I’ve made real life friends from social media. My first was on Twitter. Amber and I met through tweets and when she was in LA we went to a Sharon Osbourne closet sale together. It was a blast!
In recent years, most of my new friends develop on Instagram. Sometimes we end up meeting. Other times we simply develop our relationships through comments and DMs. It’s so wonderful to have a support system around the world, the women I call my #ssInstaFam.
With all Instgram’s algorithm changes, I often got so caught up on figuring out what was happening with my engagement that I would forget about my favorite part of the app: the connection. All this changed when I received a sweet message from a stranger across the world.
After reading one of my blog posts, she decided to reach out. She had gone through a similar experience and wanted to offer her support. She had nothing to gain by her kind words. But I had everything to gain. Her message inspired me to rethink some things in my life and helped me on so many levels.
Her simple act of kindness inspired me to reach out to people more. Of course it’s nice to comment “Cute outfit” or “Love your dress.” But outfit compliments don’t generate real connections. I’m now trying my best to really read everyone’s captions, and talk to them through comments.
Her message inspired me to remember to stop and smell and the roses, the social media roses
“To make a difference in someone’s life,
you don’t have to be brilliant, rich, beautiful or perfect.
You just have to care.”.
