How to Make a Paw Patrol Costume that Will Make Your Kid Bark with Delight

My son entered his Paw Patrol era this year. I wasn’t surprised when I asked what he wanted to be for Halloween and he immediately said Chase. I thought he’d want me to be Skye, but nope, Mama is Marshall. Since toddlers change their minds daily, I made Rocky and Rubble backups just in case. Here’s how to make a Paw Patrol costume using what you probably already have in your closet.

shop the costumes (everything I wore and used for each character):

The paw patrol costume Base

You probably already have this part covered: pants and a top in your pup’s fur color (white for Marshall, gray for Rocky, yellow for Rubble, etc).

Depending on where you live or what you’re doing for Halloween, you can make this as casual or as dressy as you want. I did one outfit with jeans, one with sweats, and one with pants. Same idea for the top, a long sleeve, tee, or sweater all work.

Budget Tip: if you don’t have a polka dot top, you can cut out black felt dots and stick them on a white teewith double sided tape.)

The paw patrol costume Second Layer

This is where you add your pup’s signature color. You can layer a tank, tee, or sleeveless sweater over your base, or if it’s warm, just tie a sweater over your shoulders.

The paw patrol costume Accessories

Now let’s Paw Patrolify the outfit.

  1. Hat
Cut out the logo from your kid’s Paw Patrol toy packaging (or print it). Glue it on felt in your pup’s color, then attach it to a baseball cap with double sided tape.
  2. Ears
Grab an ears headband to slip over your cap. If you have long hair, you can make ears like I did for Rubble. Tie your hair into loose bun pigtails and voila, brown ears (if you’re brunette).
  3. Pup Tags
Each pup has a tag. I printed the tags on my photo printer, taped ribbon on the back, and glued them to felt to make a little hook. Then I slid the shield onto a necklace I already had.

mom tips

I use this printer for almost all my DIY projects. It’s so nice to be able to print out photos at home, especially as a mom. It doubles as a normal printer as well. Highly recommend!

If you’re DIYing the shields, make double! The second my son saw mine, he wanted his own. I used colorful ribbon for his and he proudly wore his Chase shield to music class.

Here’s the image I created to print in case you want to download:

As for bags, I used what I had in my closet: my green mom bag for Rocky and my vintage Louis Vuitton backpack for Rubble. But I borrowed from my son for Marshall. Attaching my purse strap to his firetruck lunchbox turned it into the cutest Halloween handbag!

I hope that’s helpful if your kiddo loves Paw Patrol as much as mine! You can find more easy DIY Halloween costume ideas here and…

My favorite part is repurposing items from the wardrobe and crafting my own accessories. This approach is not only economical but also provides an opportunity for the whole family to get involved in the creative process of designing our outfits. This method also bears a strong resemblance to the creative spirit found within the fnaf fan community, where people frequently craft their own costumes, models, or accessories to embody their favorite characters in their own unique ways.

This is such a clever, budget-friendly approach—using the toy packaging for the logo is genius. It got me thinking about how much kids love when their toys have a voice. Over at roletts.com, we explore AI voice and text-to-speech tools that let you design or clone character voices, which could add a whole new layer of interaction to dress-up play. Imagine your little pup barking out catchphrases in a custom Marshall or Chase voice! Just a fun idea for parents who enjoy blending DIY with a bit of tech creativity.
