How to Keep A Sunburn From Peeling

Sydne Style reviews the best products to prevent peeling from a sunburnObviously the easiest way to prevent your skin from peeling is to put on sunscreen and not get sunburned in the first place! But even with applying SPF, it’s still possible to burn. I just experienced this in Mexico when I forgot to reapply my sunscreen immediately after swimming. I used the four sunburn hacks below and instead of peeling, my red skin turned into a golden brown.

1. Lather up in aloe.

The worst sunburn I ever got was eleven years ago in Hawaii. I was sick and I think my skin was extra sensitive from my antibiotics. It was beyond painful. A local on the island recommended Maui Babe After Browning Lotion and I’ve been using the magical potion ever since.

It’s a soothing blend of aloe, macadamia nut oil and vitamins that truly prevents your skin from peeling. I apply it immediately after a shower then lather up in it before bed, allowing my skin to soak it up as I sleep. It used to only be available in Hawaii but now (thankfully!) you can order it online. Seriously, magic.

For your face, I recommend an aloe mask. There a bunch of different sheet masks with soothing properties but for instant hydration, I love Kiehl’s Calendula & Aloe Masque. I keep it in the fridge and it feels like heaven when you apply to burned skin.

2. Stay hydrated and use cold water.

I hate cold showers but they are the best for a sunburn. If you’re like me and can’t stand the thought of bathing in ice, just go for room temperature and rub ice cubes on the burned sections of your skin. Staying hydrated when you’re sunburned is also key. In addition to drinking regular water throughout the day, I also sip coconut water and aloe vera juice if I can get my hands on it.

3. Spray throughout the day.

Since it’s hard to apply lotion on the go, I usually keep a spray with me to make sure my skin is always hydrated during the sunburn stage. For face, I like Mario Badescu Facial Spray because it has aloe as well as soothing rosewater (read more about rose products here).

I was recently introduced to Ahava and used their Dry Oil Body Mist to help heal my most recent burn. The vitamin E oil helps repair your skin and the sea-kissed scent makes me feel like I’m back at the beach!

4. Add repair to your nightly routine.

When my face gets sunburned, I add an extra element to my nighttime routine. For travel, I use Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Intensive Recovery Ampoules. They are these tiny capsules that really help restore damaged skin. You put them on before your moisturizer and wake up to a hydrated face.

I also like Clarins Booster Repair. I talked about these boosts that you mix into your moisturizer in my oils beauty post. Both are great for that added moisture needed to prevent your skin from peeling.

Do you have any products you swear by for sunburns? I’d love to hear them!
