I intend to learn to be kind to myself.

A couple of years ago for New Year’s, I interviewed some of the women in my life that I admire and asked them their favorite quotes about self love. Practicing self love is something I’m constantly working on. It’s so odd how easy it is to be kind to others and lift them up, but it is so hard being kind to yourself. So this year, I really want to practice being kind to myself.

I’ve been going to my therapist Kathryn Lubow for over a year now. She’s helped me work through various personal struggles. And one recurring theme is that I am so hard on myself. Part of this has made me successful. But negative talk can also take a major strain on the mind and body. Being kind to yourself is crucial! Any time I voice disappointment in myself or something I’ve done, she asks me the same question: “What would you tell your best friend if she was experiencing this?”. My answer is always pretty much the same. I’d tell my friend it’s ok and I love her and I’d give her a hug. Kathryn always smiles and I know what she’s thinking:

I need to learn to spread the same kindness to myself as I give to my friends and family.
