Halloween DIY: Sesame Street

As you may know from previous posts, I’m obsessed with Halloween. My friend Katie and I started an annual tradition where she flies to LA and we DIY our costumes the night before the holiday. Last year, we had a villains party. So picking a costume theme was a cinch. This year, we really had no clue what to be! I had seen a birds and bees couples costume that I liked, but we wanted something more original. As we walked down Hollywood Boulevard, I spotted furry blue accessories in a store window. A nostalgic light bulb went off in my head and our Sesame Street DIY project began.

I recycled my Tweety Bird costume from a five years ago, adding a new layer of feathers to freshen up the skirt. I bought napkins at Party City and cut out three Big Bird heads. I glued two on the bust ala Katy Perry’s Jean Charles de Castelbajac eye dress. Then I glued the third on an inexpensive clutch from Forever 21 using E-6000 (the best glue for crafting!). I cut up the feather wings I had made my dog and use them as arm warmers, securing them with cuffs. Then channeled Big Bird’s striped legs with colorful knee-highs and orange pumps.

For Katy, I cut up a tee from a souvenir shop, making it a one-shoulder design. We recycled a Katy Perry wig from an old Grammys shoot I styled, and then added a furry skirt and leg warmers we found in Hollywood. My favorite part? The cookie jar, which I made simply by layering cookies in a clear clutch. We found cute stuffed animal coin purses at Party City, which we attached to our bags as well.
