One of my goals with my new Casual Friday column was to provide office outfit ideas for Casual Friday. I’ve had various dress codes throughout my career from an anything goes philosophy when I was an editor at E! to more corporate styling when I worked at Boston Magazine. While I could have worn whatever I wanted at E! I always think it’s better to overdress when it comes to work. So I stuck to the same rules for both jobs. One question I’ve been asked is…
Can you wear jeans and t-shirts to the office on Casual Fridays?
The answer is yes…. but—I have a feeling you knew a but was coming— there are some guidelines I like to recommend:
- The T-Shirt: Stay away from graphic prints since they can look a little juvenile at the office. Instead, opt for solid tees in good condition. I know the whole distressed, worn-in tee is a trend right now but if you’re into it, it’s best to save it for the weekend.
- The Jeans: Darker washes are definitely better. As much as I love distressed denim, for the office, I find more classic styles (i.e. no holes!) to look more appropriate.
- The Accessories: For winter I like to add a cardigan or jacket. I love the feel of a duster cardigan because it has a bit of a dressier vibe. On bottom, you can definitely do flats. But for colder months I prefer a small heeled boot or bootie to dress things up a bit.
I’d love to hear what you wear on Casual Fridays at the office! And let me know if you have any questions you want covered in upcoming columns!
